TA2: Access to CarboEurope-IP Atmospheric Network

This activity will give access to the stations of the atmospheric network to visiting scientists. Access possibilities include:

  • Access to stations for intensive campaigns to study physical, chemical or radiative behaviour of the atmosphere

Overview of the site

Lampedusa is isolated in the central Mediterranean, far from large islands or continental areas, and from relevant sources of pollution. The island is small, rocky, and has very poor vegetation. Lampedusa is thus representative of the remote marine environment of the central Mediterranean, and particularly indicated for the measurement of background concentration of chemical secies, such as CO2, whose balance is influenced by vegetation.

The position of Lampedusa, relatively close to Africa, and one of the southernmost locations in Europe, is strategic for the study of specific phenomena relevant for climate, such as the transport and effects of Saharan dust; the transfer of solar and infrared radiation in the atmosphere; dynamical phenomena occurring between the tropics and the mid-latitudes.
